    Aesop Foundation

    About the Aesop Foundation

Since its beginnings, Aesop has prioritised support for the communities in which it operates. From humble gestures at the store level to significant donations to charity partners, Aesop has long contributed in ways that help fulfil unmet needs. As a Certified B Corporation®, Aesop meets the highest verified social and environmental performance standards, transparency, and accountability. The Aesop Foundation goes beyond, embracing our role as global citizens with responsibilities to all people and the planet. The Aesop Foundation believes those directly impacted by exclusion have the courage, ability, and passion for creating a better world. As allies, we want our generosity to magnify the efforts of these communities to lead and drive change. It is important that we show up in the right way. To this end, we will be intentional about investing in diverse organisations.

    The Aesop Foundation
What is the relationship between the Aesop Foundation and the company?downArrow

The Aesop Foundation receives an annual gift from Aesop which is part of the company’s public commitment to donate at least AUD$40 million to charitable causes by 2030. The Foundation shares its name and values with Aesop. Grant making is independent of business and the Foundation has its own governance structure, subject to UK charitable law. Grants made by the Foundation are for public benefit and can only be made to charitable organisations.

How does the Aesop Foundation make funding decisions?downArrow

The Aesop Foundation is governed by a board of trustees. Funding meetings, where proposals are presented for discussion, are held throughout the year. Partner grants are approved at the discretion of the trustees, in line with the Foundation’s strategy.

How does the Aesop Foundation measure impact?downArrow

The Aesop Foundation works with partners to measure the impact of individual grants. The Foundation has a monitoring and evaluation framework which is used for all grantees.

I have an idea, can I submit a grant proposal?downArrow

Currently the Foundation is unable to accept unsolicited proposals.

How is the Aesop Foundation governed?downArrow

The Foundation adheres to UK charitable law and has its own governance structure which is separate from Aesop the company.

How can I get in touch if I have any questions? downArrow

    Frequently asked questions

The Aesop Foundation looks to fund organisations that align with Aesop’s values and purpose.

The Foundation prioritises work with systematically excluded communities, and partners with organisations that are led by, governed by, or closely involved with the communities they seek to serve.

The Foundation can only fund registered charities, or small organisations that have a charitable fiscal sponsor. You are invited to review our strategy and goal areas for additional details.

    What we fund

80% of the Foundation’s budget is allocated to multi-year partnerships, and 20% of the budget is allocated to one-off acute social and environmental issues.

    How we fund

    20%

    Acute issues: AUD$ 50,000 - 150,000 One-off commitment

    80%

    Partnership grants: AUD$ 50,000 - 250,000 annually Commitment 1 - 5 years

The Aesop Foundation believes in trust-based philanthropy and seeks to support partners with unrestricted grants over multiple years—meaning that these partners are then free to decide how the money should be spent.

The organisational structure of the Foundation is deliberately small, to maximise the resources that can be provided to its partners. As a result, the Foundation is currently unable to accept unsolicited applications.

Because applying for a grant takes time and energy, the process aims to be as transparent and efficient as possible for those who are invited to apply.

Beyond money Where possible, the Foundation can connect grantees with other funders and provide resources for smaller organisations who do not have access to professional fundraising support. Product donations Each Aesop signature store can give products to support charitable organisations in the local community. Additional product donations are made to charitable partners via the Aesop Foundation. Matched giving Aesop has a matched-giving programme which is open to all employees. Every dollar donated to any registered charity will be matched by the business. Volunteering Aesop’s intent has always been to extend support beyond monetary means and nurture enduring relationships. All Aesop employees are encouraged to donate 1% of their time to volunteer with local organisations. Employee involvement The Aesop Foundation reflects the values of Aesop and is supported by regional employee-led Philanthropy Committees. Alongside those, the Aesop Foundation partners with Aesop’s Employee Resource Groups. There are currently three such groups, focusing on women and allies; race, ethnicity and culture; and LGBTQIA+ rights.
