Domesticity, brick by brick

When our Store Design team visited Copenhagen, they were drawn to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, some 30 kilometres north of the city centre. They spent a whole day there, basking in the mellow yet precise details of the architecture, whose human scale encourages visitors to approach the works of art as if they were in a house rather than a museum. With red brick tiles underfoot and timber overhead, the discrete glass corridors that connect the museum’s pavilions, and provide constant relationship with the surrounding landscape, are intimate and inviting.

The design of Aesop Kronprinsensgade, by contrast, turns inward, leaning into the narrow and low-ceilinged confines of its site to create an atmosphere of quiet reverence, providing refuge from the street’s hustle and bustle. Our in-house architects took material cues from the Louisiana: Danish bricks were laid by local masons who specialise in the detailed brickwork that is present in several of the city’s landmarks, while stained oak timber was crafted into a ceiling and shelves that emanate warmth and offer acoustic comfort.

The space is conceived as two geometries. The first, visible from the street, is a rectangular room where customers are invited to explore our range of unconventional formulations for the skin, hair, body and home. The second is a circular chamber where curving brick-clad basins seem to rise out of the radiating brick floor. Here, shrouded in privacy, more in-depth discoveries of our superlative skin care can occur. We welcome afficionados and novices alike to retreat into this serene environment for as long as they like.
