Aesop Shaw DC is situated within The Shay building. Created in collaboration with local architect David Jameson, its design is conceived as an abstracted spatial experience distilled from the DNA of this historic area, where jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald performed.
Recalling both the notations of musical scores and jazz instruments, a patinated brass shelving armature wraps the interior. Openings redolent of drum skins, lined with translucent parchment, are positioned within; and Aesop’s uniform amber glassware positioned to resemble musical notes on a scale. Their contact with the skins activate tones that resonate in the space.
