The design of Aesop Kirchstrasse, created in collaboration with Studio Thiersch, echoes a tension that runs through Stuttgart’s history of courageous architectural decisions—an appreciation of the old balanced with a celebration of the new. Two notable case studies provided inspiration: the 1906 Lapidarium, where a collection of stone works such as sculptures, tombstones and building fragments stand in defiance of demolition and time; and the 1929 Weissenhof Estate, a series of showcase Modernist buildings that presented a radical vision for the city’s future. This duet of influences is evident in our glowing and functional space in the central quarter of Stuttgart.

From the street, three large blocks of gold-hued travertine beckon passersby into the store. They emit a certain stability and warmth, resembling the historic building elements found at the Lapidarium—many of which were carved from radiant travertine mined within the city limits. The room’s curving back wall recalls the compositions of Modernist architecture, each element purposefully positioned within the joinery’s domestic choreography. The colour of pale sienna brick was chosen to emulate the interior walls of one of Le Corbusier’s contributions to the Weissenhof Estate an architectural gem that is still standing and open to the public.
