We have long admired Brazilian Modernist architecture and the vibrant personalities behind it;Sa and for our inaugural Brazilian signature space, we were honoured to work with preeminent architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, and his collaborator Martin Corullon of Metro Arquitetos Associados.
The design for the space embodies both architects’ characteristic regard for functional urban elegance, and for elements sourced from local culture. For example, the robust material references of the store’s construction are contrasted and complemented by handmade patterned cement tiles traditionally used for domestic flooring.
Best known for public works of singular audacity and grace, Paulo Mendes da Rocha began his career as part of the 1950s’ Paulista Brutalist architecture movement. His work is distinguished by use of simple forms and materials, and a dedication to social responsibility.
