Aespo Gastown store interior

Playful manipulations of proportion and texture

Created by our in-house Design Department, Aesop Gastown was inspired by the neighbourhood’s historical prominence in the logging industry and its role as the centre around which Vancouver developed.

Bisected tiles of locally sourced Douglas Fir were used to form a mosaic surface that covers the walls, ceiling and floor—the timber cross-sections lending warmth and intimacy to the interior. The tiled lumber also references the cobblestones and brick façades found outside on Water Street.

Shelving, product trapeze, and point-of-sale and central counters are also composed of lengthy, solid surfaces of Douglas Fir, punctuated by greenery inserted into their niches. By the front window, a recessed porcelain sink provides ample space for product demonstrations.
