Our first signature store in Hiroshima, located in the Ekie shopping centre that sits atop the train tracks of Hiroshima Station, makes ample use of Bizen—a medieval pottery technique dating to the 14th century and originating in the region. Named for a village in Okayama prefecture, it is renowned for its unpredictable finish and raw beauty. This acclaimed clay clads the walls and shelves of the store in its rich red-brown colour, inviting inspection of its textural irregularities.
The store’s long straight lines are softened with rounded corners, one of which is inset with a generous seating area that invites commuters to catch their breath, forget about the surrounding din and take in the tranquil and sensorially indulgent setting. They may then wash and moisturise their hands at the large basins in the middle of the space: covered in oxidised copper, these offer a moment of unexpected respite amid the bustling train station. Accentuating the curves that draw the eye, an earthy palette rounds out the welcome into this sanctuary of tradition.
