Store interior; featuring contrasting wooden shelving and countertops

The refurbished Aesop Fairfax, Los Angeles, takes cues from the house of architects Charles and Ray Eames in nearby Pacific Palisades. Designed and constructed in 1949, the dwelling was part of the iconic Case Study House Program, which explored new materials and technologies developed during World War II. The Eames employed prefabricated building elements to create a rhythmic, light-filled structure of steel, timber and glass.

Within the store, this industrial and yet simultaneously domestic aesthetic plays out in the shelving units that skirt the walls and conceal the back of house. Legs of blackened steel lift the furniture from the floor, contributing an effortless, floating feeling to the modestly proportioned space. Stained-pine joinery references mid-century design while framing the regular cadence of shelves and fluted glass cabinets. Near the entrance, a seat nestles neatly into one of the bays, welcoming visitors to take a moment of pause in their day.
