Aesop Marylebone store interior

After ten fruitful years in a musk-hued store designed by Studio KO, we relocated to a new home on Marylebone High Street. Inspired by the peaceful gardens and stately architecture of the majestic pocket of Central London that is Marylebone, our in-house design team created a haven of calm on the expansive corner location we now inhabit in the area. Looking to the nearby British Library for material references, the palette was narrowed down to warm timbers and cool green tones. Taking cues from the organisation of neighbourhood bookshops, the L-shaped tenancy was divided into two cosier spaces—allowing for a sense of mystery and discovery as one journeys through.

The first room is characterised by its rhythmic shelves, whose limewashed oak was carefully stained with linseed oil to enhance its innate warmth. All cabinetry for this store was handmade by Sebastian Cox, a London-based furniture maker. In the ceiling troughs above, frescos by Olivier Cousy recreate Marylebone’s green squares and the muted colours of the British Library: rectangles of forest, olive, moss, and bay leaf green intersect with warm and washed-out oranges—a composition inspired by Paul Klee’s Tower in Orange and Green (1922). A generous central basin allows for communal encounters with our full range of formulations for the skin, hair, body and home. Stepping through the threshold—built into the wall of shelves—visitors are transported into a second room devoted to more comprehensive explorations. What appears at first as an enigmatic rotating bookstand is, rather, a Fragrance Armoire—a portal into the world of our nonconformist Eaux de Parfum. Visitors can linger and contemplate their aromatic inclinations while resting on the in-built sofa, and, once a personal preference has been discerned, permeate an item of clothing with their chosen scent in the Armoire's infusion chamber. Venturing further into the depths of the store, curious minds can settle in, hang up their coat, and enjoy prolonged and individualised consultations with the adroit staff at the discreet basins.
