Aesop Far Eastern Mega City Counter interior

Amid the bright bustle of Taipei’s largest shopping complex, there is a hushed haven dedicated to curiosity, quiet talk, and care of the skin and senses. It is Aesop Far Eastern Mega City, a softly glowing space that offers visitors a gentle reprieve from the more high-spirited engagements of the mall. With muted tones and textures that recall the customary furnishings of a Traditional Chinese Medicine shop, this Aesop store is an homage to ancient health practices, located in the heart of a modern metropolis.

On entry, the mall’s glossy tiles give way to the store’s cork flooring—perhaps the first felt (if not consciously perceived) assurance that this space is founded, literally and figuratively, on physical ease. The warm timber bays that line the right-hand wall evoke the subdued practicality of traditional therapeuticestablishments, where learned purveyors of medicinal remedies have displayed their wares in clear, calm order for centuries. The drawers at the bottom of this unit are finished with a distinctive rectangular handle design—another subtle reference to a common feature of the establishments that provided the inspiration for this store.

On the opposite side, an angled wall mounted with bead-blasted stainless-steel sinks invites visitors to venture further, select a cleansing product, lather it in their hands, and rinse it away with warm water. Beyond providing the space with a sense of welcoming warmth, the wall’s deep red paint elicits thoughts of vibrant health—of flowing circulation, or the flush of a healthy complexion. Hanging cabinets above the basins instil a distinctly comforting sense of domesticity. Using this same design language of familiarity, the joinery of the cabinetry is repeated in the grid of the ceiling, increasing the sense that this is a space where one has been before, while performing the practical function of holding and concealing the light fixtures. Cork makes a final appearance in the fragrance wall bay, where the natural material acts as a textural backdrop to shelves of unconventional Eaux de Parfum.

All of these details amount to an Aesop store with a particular reverence—even a tenderness—for the clear-eyed calm of spaces that have seen to the needs of the human body for over two thousand years.
