The West Side of Manhattan has seen monumental systems for moving people and goods built, rebuilt and then abandoned. The High Line elevated railway, constructed in the 1930s and partially demolished in the 1960s, was one of these colossal but forsaken structures. Its purpose was to improve transportation efficiency and relieve clogged, dangerous conditions in New York’s most heavily used public spaces: its streets. Similarly, our design for Hudson Yards lifts shelves—as well as pipes, wiring and the like—from the ground, only very minimally touching the shell of the space. Acoustic foam with repeating pyramid forms mounted on plywood was chosen for the shelving units, which resemble edifices of the metropolis. The nonconformist material effects a certain hush, conducive to in-depth conversations about our products for the skin, hair, body and home. In the spirit of bold innovation, our in-house architects selected a Space Age lamp to illuminate the room. The interior reflects the hues of the sunset seen over the Hudson River and glinting on the windows of surrounding buildings. Weary ramblers will find efficacious formulations and sensory rejuvenation in this radiant environment, no matter how they got there.
