Aesop’s first Austrian signature store, in Vienna’s historic centre, is strongly influenced by the city’s early 20th-century architecture – particularly the work of Adolf Loos. Created by the company’s in-house Design Department, the 32-square metre space strikes a balance between contemporary minimalism and the ornate Art Deco elements of its surrounds.

The façade is distinguished by large, deep windows that reveal something of the interior atmosphere, inviting in its evocation of decades past and suggestion of a sophisticated Viennese gentleman’s haunt. The right window provides a frame for lively greenery that references sumptuous Art Deco greenhouses; while to the left of the entrance, a seating area offers a chance to observe the busy streetscape from a place of repose. The palette makes use of rich hues, with walls of bold, deep green complemented by the warmth of Walnut cabinetry and Oak flooring. Two ribbons of timber envelop the space, accented by the warm natural brass of the product demonstration sink, display shelving and accordion-like cabinet doors.
