Aesop’s approach to design is based on respecting community, culture and history. Our intention is to weave ourselves into the fabric of place and add something of merit rather than impose a discordant presence.

Our initial design for Aesop Georgetown failed to respect community, culture and history. The concept created for the opening in 2017 was inspired by the history of Georgetown as a trade post for tobacco and by the proximity with the Potomac River. The walls of the store were outfitted with Southern Pine sticks reminiscent of tobacco barns. In referencing this history, our design neglected to acknowledge the historical ties between tobacco plantations and slavery, and the enduring and pervasive impact slavery has had on the Black community, economically, culturally, socially and biologically. As a company, we take full responsibility for failing to recognize this at the time, and we deeply apologize to our employees, customers, and partners for our mistake.

A Space Reimagined

In June 2020, the inspiration behind the design was called into question. We realized how serious our mistake was, and we made the immediate decision to refit the store, in line with Aesop’s values of respect and integrity. Renovations were completed within three months and the store reopened in October 2020.   Since then, we have been in conversation with our local team about how we could give Aesop Georgetown a second life. In partnership with our local team, we decided that rather than imposing a new permanent narrative on the space, we would curate exhibits featuring local BIPOC artists, which would give us an opportunity to amplify under-represented voices and create ongoing conversation on their work. We welcome you to learn more about our Georgetown Spotlight initiative, which launched in October 2021.

A Mindset of Learning

We also realize the mistake we made at Georgetown is not isolated to a specific store, but points to the systemic changes we need to make to our design processes, and more broadly within our company. Since July 2020, we have appointed a consultancy firm specialized in DE&I issues, and hired a permanent DE&I specialist within the Aesop team. Our management team is building a comprehensive plan aimed at transforming Aesop, with a specific focus on gathering insights; building a safe and inclusive workplace; diversifying our workforce; and reviewing how we show up for our customers and communities, through our products, our communication, and our stores.
