Having opened our first Lyon signature store last year, it is a pleasure to partner with the Biennale de Lyon for the first time. The 14th edition of the Biennale, which is held from 20 September 2017 to 7 January 2018, is the second instalment in a trilogy conceived around the theme ‘Moderne’.
For the 2017 Biennale, director Thierry Raspail invited Emma Lavigne to co-curate Mondes Flottants, a volume which takes its name from a direct translation of the Japanese word ‘ukiyo’. Originally coined to describe the hedonistic urban lifestyle of the Edo period, ‘ukiyo’ expresses the ephemerality of the world. It was in this spirit that Lavigne – director of the Centre Pompidou Metz – imagined a Biennale set in and around central Lyon, occurring ‘like a voyage around an archipelago of islands’.
This year, over sixty artists from around the world will exhibit work in a variety of cultural spaces around the city, including La Sucrière, macLYON and beneath the dome in Place Antonin Poncet. Among the Biennale highlights is Rendez-vous 17, which presents twenty international emerging artists. Now in its fifteenth year, the Rendez-vous has become a globally renowned platform dedicated to emerging practitioners, and counts Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul (recipient of the 2010 Palme d’or at Cannes 2010) and Sweden’s Nathalie Djurberg (awarded the Lion d’argent at the Venice Biennale de Venise in 2009) among its illustrious alumni.
Post-Biennale visit, you are most welcome to visit our Lyon signature store, on rue du Président Edouard Herriot, a bold yet refined space created by our in-house Design Department. For more information on the exhibition, artists and curators, we suggest browsing the Biennale de Lyon website.
