Inspired by historic architectural pavilions such as Sverre Fehn’s Nordic Pavilion at the 1962 Venice Biennale and Le Corbusier’s 1950-1965 Tower of Shadows in Chandigarh, India, Aesop Lotte Suji employs a slender architectural framework of white-washed ash plywood to enhance the feeling of verticality and volume in a shallow space. Irregular, slanted apertures form a deep, perforated façade that behaves like a brise soleil: natural light filters through the threshold while linear shadows strike the interior’s rear walls. The knots and grain of the plywood’s surface, muted by the lime-based wash, reference the timber-formed concrete of Fehn’s Pavilion. Stepping through angular openings, clients transition into a calm, consistent space of off-white tones. The rhythmic language of framed voids continues within the store, creating a further sense of depth. Two central volumes are held apart in apparent magnetic tension on the polished white sand concrete.
