Come autumn, Aesop will open its doors to a new Hong Kong store, Aesop Gough Street, a two-storey space and Facial Treatment room. As designs are finalised, the space will open from June to July for a tribute to Sheung Wan’s industrial roots.

With a history that far outweighs its diminutive two-block size, Gough Street was once considered the borderland between the city’s European and Chinese quarters, later housing a burgeoning printing industry. Now a mélange of old Hong Kong and global arts and commerce, it still recalls the scent of ink.

To pay homage to this celebrated craft, letterpress printers, sourced from the neighbourhood, will print the poem 偶然, or ‘Chance,’ by Xu Zhimo in its original Chinese as well as English translation—a nod to Hong Kong’s dual languages. Those in the area are invited to explore the new space and observe the printing process in action.
