Black Movie International Independent Film Festival 2018

Now in its 19th iteration, the Black Movie International Independent Film Festival returns to Geneva to honour independent cinema—from India to the Ivory Coast; Portugal to the Philippines; and Argentina to Israel—with a dynamic, thought-provoking and timely programme.

The 2018 festival’s theme is a nod to the celestial sphere, but its works are firmly grounded in contemporary issues. With 120 films to screen over ten days, social questions and quandaries are at its heart. The retrospective Mauvais genre rétroqueer 18+ selection showcases eleven standout queer films from the festival’s first 18 years, while the Mauvais genre 2018 section will premiere eight new works centred on sexuality and gender.

Other programme highlights include Le Salaire de la Peur, six films that interrogate the value of labour and work; Les Résistantes, a section dedicated to remarkable women; and the festival’s renowned Nuits Blanches, which will take place at the Cercle des Bains—renamed ‘Xanadu’ for the occasion—in the heart of Geneva.

In 2018, we are pleased to support the Black Movie International Independent Film Festival for the fifth year, and to offer our customers the opportunity to attend.

To win two passes to a screening of your choice, please respond via email with your contact details.

To tie in with the Mauvais genre rétroqueer section, we are also delighted to offer the chance to attend an in-conversation event on Monday 22 January at 7pm around the topic ‘Is there a thing called queer aesthetics?’ with a stimulating panel of academics, activists and filmmakers. Attendees will receive free entry to a film of their choice from this section. If you wish to attend, please register your interest via email.

Kindly note that as both film passes and spaces for the talk are limited in quantity, we encourage your prompt response to avoid disappointment.
