It is a great pleasure to support a new exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery—‘Surreal Science: Loudon Collection with Salvatore Arancio’. The Gallery has invited the Italian-born artist Arancio to select, curate and respond to an array of objects drawn from the collection of George Loudon, renowned for his interest in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century life sciences and his assorted curios relating to their study and teaching.

The resulting exhibition is at once dreamlike, and profoundly anchored to the pragmatism of craft; an homage to scientific progress, historic artisanship, and the intersection between biology and art. Divested of their pedagogical significance, and under Arancio’s astute eye, the objects form a mesmerising, strange assembly. Entry is complimentary.

‘Art for the sake of truth, art for the sake of the good and the beautiful, that is the faith I am searching for.

George Sand
