Aesop Karrinyup store interior, featuring a circular, standalone basin area.

Aesop Karrinyup, Perth, explores how people inhabit pure geometrical forms and the spaces created between them. Taking inspiration from Pezo Von Ellrichshausen’s intersecting circles at the Venice Biennale (2016) and William Blackwell’s seminal text Geometry in Architecture (1984), the store uses the repeated motif of a large curved wall to create three cocoons within the room’s envelope. The sequence begins with a substantial semi-circular basin shielded by a corresponding rounded partition, encouraging intimate interactions with our product range. As one journeys through the store, an amphitheatre of skincare opens up: a generous arching wall ensconces the visitor while a central counter reiterates the circular language, its moon-like mirror pivoting between two individual basins. The third and final enclosure provides ample seating for quiet respose or in-depth discussion, surrounded by the beguiling scents of Aesop’s home and personal care products.

The store’s pale blue hue was informed by the saturated light and over-exposed colours of sun, sea, and sand at nearby Karrinyup Beach. Custom-made tiles, produced in partnership with the last remaining commercial tile manufacturers in Australia, line the curvilinear walls while lime-based paint coats the rectilinear walls and ceiling. Reflecting the geometric forms below, recessed orbs appear as skylights floating above.
