The Enigmatic Mind

Long before social psychology gained momentum, humans have studied one another. How we interact with others is endlessly fascinating, seeking knowledge through analysis, observation, and experimentation.

Even the simple act of gift-giving requires us to surmise a subject’s desires, test by execution, and obtain results via the recipient’s reaction. Fortunately, these types of social experiments provide both pleasure and understanding, so we should endeavour to embrace them fully.

Is it love or a shaky bridge?

This was a question at the heart of the Capilano Suspension Bridge experiment (1974). To test whether attraction could be misattributed to a similar sensation, a female assistant interviewed two groups of males: one group on a low, stable bridge, the other on an anxiety-inducing suspension bridge. With hearts racing, the men on the suspension bridge were significantly more likely to express romantic feelings towards the assistant. So, when considering potential suitors, do so with feet firmly on the ground.

Should we keep friends close?

A trio of social psychologists posited the propinquity effect (1950), noting humans are more likely to form relationships among those with whom they regularly interact. The psychologists then asked residents at a university to rate their friendships; the closer residents’ dorms were to each other, the more likely they were to be friends. Those located near stairwells or mailboxes were also significantly more likely to have friends on other floors. These results encourage us to engineer our own relationships, scheduling more time to share moments or simply the same air.

Is sharing a problem the solution?

Common goals are powerful in bringing people together, as demonstrated in the Robbers Cave Experiment (1954), named after the national park where it took place. Two dozen twelve-year-old boys were pitted against each other for limited resources, after which researchers set out to diffuse the tension. First, a ‘broken’ water-tank was introduced, requiring the boys to work together toward a solution. Next, they had to make a democratic decision on the evening’s choice of films. Riding the bus home as a unified group, the boys confirmed what smart parents have known all along: sometimes you need to create smaller problems in order to solve the larger ones.

Are we all connected?

‘Six degrees of separation’ implies we are mere acquaintances away from knowing everyone on the planet, but how accurate is it? The small-world experiment (1967) involved dispatching randomly-addressed folders across the USA with instructions to pass it on to someone who could possibly aid in its delivery. While it took an average of six ‘links’, only 64 of 300 folders reached their destination, casting doubt on the premise. Despite this criticism, social media companies now have the data to support what the experiment sought to prove with one slight difference; instead of six degrees, they estimate it to be just four.

Is there etiquette in an emergency?

It is natural to want to help others however, various factors hold us back. After numerous witnesses reportedly failed to respond to a crime, a series of ‘emergencies’ were staged (1968), which demonstrated that the greater number of people present, the less likely they are to respond. The phenomenon of assuming someone else will help is known as the bystander effect, and has implications when it comes to medical emergencies. If someone requires an ambulance, single yourself out to make the call; it’s one of the best things you can do to for the wellbeing of others.

If we agree, is it conformity?

The Asch conformity experiments (1951) investigated the ways in which an individual’s behaviour is influenced by those around them. Unsuspecting subjects were placed among a larger group of informed participants and asked to match lines of varying lengths. While the informed participants gave the correct answer the first two times, subsequent answers were intentionally incorrect, resulting in roughly 32 per cent of the subjects conforming. When later asked why, some subjects said it was to fit in (normative influence) while others believed the group was better informed (informational influence). Something to consider at your next meeting.
