Aesop Vieux-Montréal

The simplicity of the materials belies an inherent beauty, born of their tactile nature and relaxed character.

Our latest Montréal signature store is located on the ground floor of the Harrison-Stephens building in the city’s historic quarter. For this new space, our in-house Design Department conceived an interior reflecting the industrial roots of the area and the storied history of the host building—a former residence that has lived many lives: boot manufacturer; warehouse for paints, oils and glass; and haberdashery, among them.

In respect of these influences, the 650-square foot store assumes a relaxed pragmatism which sees functional inner workings exposed and rough, original details retained. Off-the-shelf construction materials such as L-shaped steel bars, common bricks, and fiber cement board fabricate the majority of practical elements, forming product shelving and an extended counter housing a bank of three stainless steel basins and point of sale.

The imperfection of original brickwork and timber is mirrored in the unfinished quality of these materials—the simplicity of which belies an inherent beauty, born of their tactile nature and relaxed character. Additions to an otherwise linear layout include a textural, waxed canvas curtain and a pair of Fritz Hansen Pelikan side chairs.
