Aesop Emporium was created in collaboration with local firm Kerstin Thompson Architects – with whom we also worked on other Melbourne spaces in Collins Street and Chadstone, and on signature stores in Carindale, Brisbane, and Burnside, Adelaide.
The design is distinguished by singular use of native Spotted Gum timber; in the form of sustainably sourced hardwood ply, this versatile material is employed for floors, shelves; and most intriguingly, in distinctive perforated screens for the shopfront and interior walls. Also functioning as doors, the screens define the entry and filter light to provide a retreat from the brightly illuminated arcade beyond. During business hours, they fold back to invite passers-by to enter.
The timber’s warm hue is an apt complement to Aesop’s product display, and the expression of its grain enriches the store’s simple forms. The whole creates an immersive sense of intimacy and calm.
